What I wore: Whirlwind Trip to DC

“The finest clothing made is a person’s skin, but, of course, society demands something more than this.”  ~Mark Twain

As I was getting dressed last Wednesday morning my original plan was for a black chunky knit turtleneck and something that was clearly equally as boring since I can’t remember what I was planning on wearing but probably pants. Since pants are suggested in the District of Columbia.

Not that shirts are required either. (ba dum)

And then in the throes of realizing that I had an hour before my flight and I was still in a bathrobe I decided on color. It has been the longest fucking winter ever. Whereas at the start I was all, “Snow! Snowshoeing! Feel free to bounce a quarter off of my ass!” now I’m all “fuck that noise, where’s the sun?” So I opted for color instead. I wore both the cardigan and scarf last week at BlissDom. They’re from J.Crew and Mustard Seed respectively:

I’ve always wanted a photo of my ass in those jeans and now I have one. What of it? The jeans are from Old Navy they’re called ‘Diva’. Upon looking at the ON website I do not see them anymore so I suppose the ‘Dreamer‘ might come closest? Or I have a pair of Gap 1969 bootcuts that make my ass look equally as fantastic.

This worked for the plane and then date night at PS 7′s. I’m far more romantic when I’m comfortable and wearing sparkly flats. They’re from Banana Republic. Aren’t they fantastic?

The following day I had meetings on the Hill and here’s where things get tricky and one would think that after three years of this lifestyle, I would be better equipped and yet…I am not and I’m talking about shoes here. Not the fact that my cleavage is perpetually just hanging out.

The wrap dress is from my mother who gifted it to me because it was too big and instead of saying Wow, thanks for pointing out the width of my shoulders, ass and hips, I just took the dress and rocked it. The cardigan is courtesy of Ann Taylor Loft. I am a huge fan of ruffles and again with the color which brings light and joy into a city where everyone walks around serious and wears sneakers with their dresses. Pearls come standard. Every woman should have a set of pearls to wear. They make you feel all ladylike and shit. (I just winked. You couldn’t see me wink but I did.)

But then the shoes. These are boots with a bit of a heel. Not a huge heel but a little somethin’ somethin’. They’re cute and all but not made for walking around marble hallways all day. I have yet to find the perfect pair of boots. I need something for fat calves, big feet (size 11) and with a little heel to give the illusion of height. I feel as if I’ve looked everywhere to no avail. So I end up switching the boots off with a pair of flats for walking and then back to the boots. I need something to spend a day in. Any suggestions?

Two questions: 1) What brand are the jeans? and 2) Where did you find such a pretty color of sparkly shoes? I can only find boring black and silver.

I hit publish before going back through. I just added to the post but the jeans are from Old Navy (Diva but they don’t seem to have anymore so I suggest the Dreamer or a pair of Gap 1969s). The shoes are from Banana Republic and they’re on sale. Or on sale for what BR would call a sale. They still have them in a bunch of sizes.

I, too, have the bootcut GAP 1969 jeans that make my ass look fantastic.

Best part about BlogHer 09 was getting a gift card for those jeans.

I have zero boot advice, but have to say that I love your style. You look fabulous in every outfit you post! I especially love the ruffle cardigan and the sparkly flats. Also, like any good Southern girl, I adore pearls so you get extra points for the classic strand.

I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but I can vouch for these: http://www.dsw.com/shoe/impo+hallie+boot+?prodId=dsw12prod2830031&productRef=SEARCH

I wear a 10.5 and have a hard time finding boots that fit my calves, but these fit great. They are surprisingly comfortable. I am wearing them today, and even though I’ve spent much of my day on the Hill and at fundraisers, my feet feel good. That never happens!

How you write about DC makes me laugh. It’s as though you never get off of Capitol Hill or K St. when you visit. Because trust, the District has fashion, art, music and good food happening in spades. If you need a tour guide with an in to our more cultured side, please drop a line. No need to suffer when you visit. ;-)

Kimberly – I’m being totally hyperbolic. Promise! I lived there for six years and am there once a month. I know my way around and I know that not everyone is straight-laced and conservative. It’s all in good fun.
