Patriotism defined

“Buying something on sale is a very special feeling.  In fact, the less I pay for something, the more it is worth to me.  I have a dress that I paid so little for that I am afraid to wear it.  I could spill something on it, and then how would I replace it for that amount of money?”  ~Rita Rudner

Patriotism – noun: devoted love, support and defense of one’s country; national loyalty

Her: So yesterday I was talking to someone who said they hadn’t worked for over two weeks. And I was all “OMG that is so sad”. And then awhile later they asked what I had done for the day and I was all “shopping”.

Me: *snorting*

Her: Doing my part to hold up the fledgling economy one cashmere sweater at a time. It’s a tough job.

Me: But someone has to do it. You’re so right though. So many people cannot afford to shop right now so we should do what we can to boost the economy. And if it means that I own a hell of a lot of argyle then so be it.

Her: IT IS OUR PATRIOTIC DUTY.

You know, I find myself doing the same thing. I’ve been spending money on clothes like a drunken sailor (who’s into retro dresses- what?).

I think the reason is that I’m afraid that they’ll stop making nice clothes once people stop shopping. Also? Sales.

Here I was feeling bad yesterday for buying my fancy takeout food. Now I know that I was just being patriotic. Thanks for setting the record straight.

I only recently retired my 9/11 boots, the whoppingly expensive kicks I bought at Barney’s after Guiliani implored us to spend money.

Strangely enough, I just spent money on a winter coat (something I’ve been wanting to get for the past few years, but just never got around to it). Totally something I didn’t NEED, but that I WANTED…and I don’t do that very often. So I guess I was subconsciously following in your footsteps! :)

No one had better ever say I don’t love my country.

I love this logic. I believe shopping for wine is included in this category of patriotic shopping.

You know I can actually hear her voice saying that. She’s hilarious, even if she did take J.Crew’s name in vain on Twitter earlier.

it’s like an authority figure is telling me that “this is the way it is,” I want to say “you’re not the boss of me!”

and then I buy an infant (an INFANT! how wasteful!) more adorable dresses.

And why, as an unemployed person, I joined a wine club that will charge my card every month and send two bottles of wine to my house. Without me ever having to leave.

Have you ever been to the mall with a six year old? I’ll have to show my patriotism in some other way.
