A moment

November 28, 2007 | Filed under: Comes And Goes, Socially Awkward Barbie™

Misfortunes one can endure - they come from outside, they are accidents. But to suffer for one’s own faults - ah! there is the sting of life.” ~Oscar Wilde

I’ve been chastised for having my door shut and for shutting people out in general. Apparently it comes off as me being too private or plotting something or being a bitch. Even though it’s not a community door and there is no need for me to defend myself, I’ve been explaining it over and over again because I’m not plotting in here with blueprints of how to case the joint, I’m sitting in here leaned back as far as my chair will take me. My door is now wide open so people can watch me do the really exciting act of staring off into space and biting my lower lip while tapping the top of my coffee cup. Riveting.

Even when nothing is wrong something ends up being wrong and I feel at unease. Mornings have been for shit lately though I did surprise myself when I was sitting at my desk at nine AM and ready to take on the world at about 11:15. I know what needs to be done and I have to be reminded by others that things are not that bad and it’s not like I’m picking cotton so there really is no cause for complaint. I would say that I hate myself for being all ‘woe is me’ and shit but at least I’m honest when hit by the one two punch of ennui and petulance.

By next week I’ll be back to my normal, happy, wine drinking, table dancing, throwing up the finger to piss poor merging drivers, self. But for now I’m just eh and I really needn’t defend myself for needing a moment, but there you go.

Yeah, folks do get a bit pissy when you shut the door. Now what I say? Screw them. But I’m a self-centered bitch like that. ;-)

  2. Jennie! says:

I always want to shut my door. Because why is there a door? So you can shut it.

  3. sweetney says:

dude, everyone deserves a moment. fuck that shit. doors are made for closin’, as Jennie rightly notes.

  4. sandra says:

I think there’s nothing wrong with a bit of a pity party here and there. And if you want to have it with your door shut, screw ‘em.

  5. Angella says:

You take as long of a moment as you need.

    And shut the door.

    :)

  6. Katie says:

Everyone needs and deserves quiet moments to themselves. Enjoy yours :)

I do not understand the door needs to be open issue. TW had the same problem when she was working at UF. She got points off of her performance appraisal every quarter because she closed her door too much. It was apparently an indication that she wasn’t social enough or collegial enough or some BS. Wasn’t she there to work rather than socialize?

  8. token says:

I’d love to have a door! And yeah, I’d close it, too!

  9. Shash says:

I understand the eh. I’ve been to Albany in the winter. :)

    Shash

ahh…. i remember the days when i had an office door to shut. now, i scream at everyone in my hosue while slamming the bathroom door for some much needed privacy.

Yeah, at least you HAVE a door to shut! I’m a privacy hound and what some would call “anti-social” at work (hey, I socialize with my friends; I WORK with my coworkers!). And alas, I sit in a cube. Well, not really a cube. One of those desks with walls half as high as a cube, so everyone can see me & my desk as they walk by. I am so, so grateful for the privacy screen on my computer monitor, b/c if I didn’t have that, I wouldn’t be typing this right now. Nor would I have won so many games of Scrabulous on Facebook. But I digress.

I think there should be 2 separate zones in offices, like they used to have in restaurants for smoking & nonsmoking customers. Except in workplaces they’d be private and social zones, and they could lump all the get-along gang people together, and the people who like to work rather than socialize can shut their doors and nobody would bat an eyelash. I mean, we have email now, so why do we need to physically sit near people in our department or team anyway?

We are currently having the open door/closed door battle at my job. I could give a shit, but the supervisor is all up in our faces about appearing to be a friendly office and keeping doors open. Is there really much of a point in creating that appearance when there are 6 of us total, and we all can’t stand each other?

    NO.

I keep the door shut because mostly? I don’t like people. Internet people are different, though.

I read on twitter that you’ll be in OKC…that’s my neck of the woods. We should have a drink. :)
